Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest municipal utility in the United States, founded in 1902 to deliver water to the City of Los Angeles, with electric distribution beginning in 1916. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, LADWP serves over 4 million residents across a 465-square-mile service area. The utility provides electricity to 1.54 million customers in Los Angeles and 6,000 in Owens Valley, and water to 679,000 active service connections. LADWP operates 8,009 MW of net dependable capacity from a diverse mix including 34% renewable energy, 27% natural gas, 14% nuclear, 3% large hydroelectric, and 21% coal. The company has committed to achieving 100% clean energy by 2035, with recent milestones including the Eland Solar-plus-Storage Center providing 400 MW of solar energy and 1,200 MWh of storage. The utility employs approximately 10,000 people and is financed solely through water and electric sales, with no tax support.
