About LINK Payment Processing
LINK is the UK's cash machine network, launched in 1985. It connects virtually every ATM in the UK to LINK-enabled cards. As an inter-bank payment system, LINK is regulated by the Bank of England and the Payment Systems Regulator. The network processes around 921 million cash withdrawals annually, dispensing approximately £80 billion in cash. LINK is a not-for-profit organisation that maintains both free-to-use and pay-to-use ATMs, with free machines funded by card-issuing banks through interchange fees. The system operates a Financial Inclusion Programme to protect free access to cash, particularly in remote and deprived areas. LINK works alongside Bacs, CHAPS, and Faster Payments as a key part of the UK's financial services infrastructure.
